French Tech Down Under

According to the latest KPMG Venture Pulse report, Australian startups raised US$1.6 billion in 2020, up from US$1.48 billion in 2019. The top deals included Brighte raising $83.5 million, SiteMinder with $70 million, and Canva with $60 million.

The timing was also good to catch up with one of the younger French Tech communities. Here’s four things we learned this about this outpost that is located 15,000 km from France:

  1. Launched in 2018, French Tech Australia now has 23 registered startups in its community.
  2. Sydney is leading hotspot, with 40% of the French Tech presence, followed by Melbourne at 30%, Adelaide at 15%, Brisbane at 10%, and Canberra at 5%.
  3. The leading sector for French Tech Australia is Greentech, followed by MedTech.
  4. In April, French Tech Australia had become sufficiently established to receive the official French Tech label. It was one of 9 that received that title, including Atlanta, Istanbul, Chicago and Munich.
